She’s always loved to cook
to say I love you without needing words.
She enjoyed caring for others
it felt like breathing, something natural.
But on this soft spring day
she explored something new
a gentle, unfamiliar love.
Today, the care turns inward.
She sets a plate in front of her,
as she too is worthy of being fed.
She is proud of the meal in front of her,
not fearful of the carbs, not concerned about the calories.
She is mindful, savoring each bite.
She feels the need to remind herself:
I am worthy of love.
I am worthy of life.
I deserve a life I want to live.
She says it again,
as if teaching her body a new language:
I deserve a life I want to live
a life where weight
and worth
are no longer mistaken
for the same thing.
